Viola, a young gentlewoman, finds herself alone on the coast of Illyria following a shipwreck that she is certain has taken her brother from her. Seeking safety, she disguises herself as a young boy, Cesario, and enters the service of Duke Orsino, quickly falling in love with him but unable to profess that love while she maintains her facade. Orsino suffers exquisitely in unrequited love for the beautiful Countess Olivia who rebuffs his advances as she grieves her own lost brother and father. Desperate to win her over, Orsino sends Cesario to court the Countess on his behalf, but Olivia quickly falls for the beautiful and eloquent servant. Meanwhile, Olivia’s uncle Toby has invited the witless but wealthy Sir Andrew to come stay with him to drink and carouse while the lady of the house has shut herself away. Only the severe and serious Malvolio seems to have any interest in maintaining order and rule, and so begins a plot to comically humiliate the spoil-sport steward. And weaving through it all is Feste, the jester, whose sharp wit and poignant songs cut to the heart of the desires, delusions, virtues, and vices that animate the inhabitants of Illyria. At once hilarious and moving, Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night explores the power of desire in all its complex forms, and the uncertain borders between love and grief, exposing the all-too-human tendency to laugh so that we don’t cry.

Cast Members

  • JOHN AUSTIN as Malvolio

John (he/him) is thrilled to be part of the Electric City Players once more, having previously appeared as Ross and the drunken Porter in their spring 2024 production of Macbeth. He previously appeared as Elwood P. Dowd in Mary Chase's Harvey and as Philip Lombard in Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, both for the Lindsay Little Theatre. Most recently he was seen as Dr. Dale Seslick in the Peterborough Theatre Guild production of How To Survive A Zombie Apocalypse. John would like to extend an extra special thank-you to his beautiful wife Brittany-Ann, without whose express permission he might not have been able to appear in this play.

  • ROBERT BARROW as Sir Toby Belch

When he’s not mugging on stage, Robert (he/him) can be found devoting his creative energy to film podcasting as well as multiple novels, short stories, and poetry projects. If he’s not writing or talking about movies, he plies his trade as a Social Service Worker and Mental Health and Addiction Worker.

  • ZOE DUNAWAY as Valentine/Officer 1

Zoe (she/her) is a Grade 11 student at Thomas A. Stewart in the Integrated Arts program. She loves reading, baking, writing, and listening to music. Zoe has been in local community theatre productions with Arbour Theatre and The Peterborough Theatre Guild as well as shows at her school. In late spring she will be in the TASS production of School of Rock: The Musical. She had had such a fun time working on this great show!

  • LELA FOX-DORAN as Fabian

Lela (they/them) has been part of the Peterborough theatre community for a little over a year and a half and has no plans to stop. You may recognize them as Felicity Cunningham in The Real Inspector Hound (TTOK, 2023), Seyton/Murderer 3 in Macbeth (ECP, 2024), or, most recently, Scarecrow in Dorothy in Wonderland (PTG, 2024). Lela is also very grateful to be back on hair and makeup with ECP, even if they don't get to splatter the cast with blood this time. Cheers to this phenomenal, hilarious cast. Cheers to our talented and seemingly tireless directors. Cheers to our dedicated, incredible crew. Cheers to you for supporting the arts.

  • CARISSA KAYE as Olivia

Carissa (she/her) is delighted to be in her second season with The Electric City Players, after moving to Peterborough with her husband and their herd of cats in October, 2023. You may recognize her from last year’s Macbeth, where she brought life, and then a bloody death, to Banquo, or from the 10 Minute Play Festival in Tick Talk, directed by Bea Quarrie. Carissa has been acting since childhood, and is forever grateful for the warm embrace that the Peterborough theatre community welcomed her with from the moment she arrived in this city. Thank you for supporting local theatre; without it, we’re all lost at sea.

  • EMMAROSE MacDONALD as Maria

EmmaRose (she/her) is an artist educator based in Peterborough/Nogojiwanong. She trained in theatre at York University and is delighted to be returning to the stage after focusing on arts education and administration for many years. She has worked in local school boards as well as with Tarragon Theatre, Young People’s Theatre, Nightwood Theatre and the Toronto Fringe Festival. EmmaRose has performed as a musician with After the Revolution and Redefine Arts. Her first Shakespeare role was Beatrice in a surfer version of Much Ado About Nothing at age 15. She is thrilled to tackle Shakespeare again as a part of Twelfth Night and wants to thank the cast and crew for all of their hard work.

  • MEGHAN MacNEILL as Curio/Servant/Officer

Meghan (she/her) is a Trent undergraduate student majoring in English, with a love for Shakespeare. When she isn’t rehearsing it, she’s studying it. This is her first stage role in Peterborough, and she is thrilled to be part of this production of Twelfth Night. Working with the Electric City Players again has been a joy, and she hopes that you enjoy the show as much as she has enjoyed being part of it!

  • GERRY McBRIDE as Feste

Gerry (he/him) is excited to have connected with Peterborough’s theatre community in his retirement after many years as an elementary school teacher. He was last on stage in The Crucible with the Peterborough Theatre Guild in 2023. Last year, he also directed the Market Hall production of the historical play Tide of Hope for Trent Valley Archives Theatre. Gerry is so grateful to have been welcomed into the Electric City Players and to have this chance to perform with such a talented (and fun) cast and crew. His big takeaway from performing in Twelfth Night: if you suspect Mr. Shakespeare intended the line as a joke, especially a dirty joke, you are almost certainly correct.

  • SEAMUS McCANN as Sir Andrew Aguecheek

Seamus (he/him) has been involved in theatre since high school and has been active both on stage and behind the scenes for the last 25 years—from actor and director, to producer and stage manager! He was nominated for Best Actor in the Eastern Ontario Drama League Festival for his role in Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun, and won Best Use of Speech. Seamus founded For A Cause Theatre (FACT), to support local organizations through theatre. He loves the comradery and the creative process of theatre, and the opportunity it provides to explore characters and situations you don’t often encounter in everyday life. This is his second experience working with ECP on Shakespeare and is delighted to get to be funny this time. Outside the theatre, Seamus is a Registered Massage Therapist.

  • ARDEN PAYNE as Stage Manager

Since her backstage debut as the Assistant Stage Manager for ECP's Macbeth, Arden has been promoted to stage manager of Twelfth Night (thank you, thank you). It has been a very special experience being back with her friends, and making many new ones in this cast/crew, as well as having been a part of bringing her favourite Shakespeare play to life! Audiences are in for a very special treat with this one, enjoy!

  • JASON SHULHA as Duke Orsino

Jason (he/him) is a husband, father, professor, avid outdoor enthusiast, and an exceptionally talented shower singer. While living abroad, Jason had the opportunity to work with dedicated community theatre groups in Istanbul, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai and has also had the privilege of performing at the Domino Theatre in Kingston and the Toronto Fringe Festival more locally. Jason wishes to thank the cast and crew for their warmth and generosity of spirit and, and to all of his friends for their support in making this endeavour possible. He also wishes to extend special thanks to his husband, who is his everything, and his children who are a constant inspiration.

  • EDDY SWEENEY as Sebastian

Eddy (he/him) has been an active player in the Peterborough community theatre scene for ten years. Twelfth Night is his second experience with Shakespeare, having played Macduff in ECP’s 2024 production of Macbeth. Eddy was a passionate reader of Shakespeare during his undergraduate studies in English at Trent and has been thrilled to get to put all that reading to good use on the stage. Most recently, Eddy played Charlie Edwards in Mary’s Wedding and Perchile in Fiddler on the Roof, both for the Peterborough Theatre Guild. In recent years he has been on stage with all of the major theatre companies in town. He is excited to work with this hilarious and passionate group of theatre nerds.

  • JACK van ROOSMALEN as Captain/Antonio

Jack (he/him) is loving Shakespeare! He discovered his love for theatre early, in grade school, and has been involved in community theatre groups for many years, both in the GTA, and for the past five years here in Peterborough. This is his first foray into the wonderful world of William Shakespeare (although he did help out stage managing The Electric City Players’ production of Macbeth last year). More recently, you may have seen Jack onstage in The Peterborough Theatre Guild’s productions of Paradiso Inn, Dorothy in Wonderland, or maybe even one of the staged readings they have produced over the past few years. He is thankful to the directors, the crew, and of course this fun and amazing cast who have supported him on this exciting voyage of discovery.

  • LAUREN YANDT as Viola

Lauren (she/her) is thrilled to be back in another production with the Electric City Players, and has had so much fun bringing Viola to life. A big hug and many thanks to the cast, the crew, the band, and our lovely directors for making this such a positive, supportive, and joyful experience from start to finish. You may recognize Lauren from her performance as Lady Macduff in ECP’s Macbeth! She is grateful to not get murdered this time.

Cakes and Ales
(The Twelfth Night House Band)

  • CALVIN BAKELAAR on Drums

Calvin (he/him) is so excited to be back in the world of theatre after a five-year break! A lifelong musician, Calvin has been drumming since he was a kid, and it’s shaped so much of his creative journey. Locally, he’s best known as a singer/songwriter for his indie folk project, VANCAMP, where he blends heartfelt storytelling with catchy, rhythmic melodies. In 2024, he was named the Peterborough Folk Festival Emerging Artist of the Year. Local theatre fans might remember him from The Little Mermaid (2016) and Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2019). Outside of theatre, Calvin has been busy performing across Ontario and releasing original music, including his debut album, Diner Coffee, this past September. He’s thrilled to be part of this production and can’t wait to share the experience with this amazing cast, crew, and audience.

  • SHELBY CRAWFORD on Vocals

Shelby (she/her) is thrilled to make her live singing debut as the vocalist for Cakes and Ales. A fourth-year student in the Teacher Education Stream at Trent University, Shelby is majoring in English Literature. Her love for music began at a young age, singing alongside her mother, writing songs, and collecting records. This performance marks an exciting step in her journey toward more live singing opportunities. Shelby’s artistic journey extends beyond music. She grew up immersed in the competitive dance world, excelling as both a performer and a teacher in styles such as musical theatre, jazz, and contemporary. These experiences honed her ability to connect with an audience, a skill she’s excited to bring to the stage in a new capacity as a singer. With this performance, Shelby combines her dedication to the arts and her deep appreciation for storytelling. She is grateful for the opportunity to share her voice with the audience. Offstage, Shelby is preparing for a future as an educator, with plans to inspire the next generation through her love of literature and the arts—and perhaps some witty commentary

  • JEREMY KIRKLAND on Guitar

Jeremy (he/him) is a lifelong Peterborough area resident who has been playing guitar since his high school days.

  • LIAM PARKER on Bass

Liam (they/them or he/him) is thrilled to join the Electric City Players pit band, Cakes and Ales! No stranger to music or theatre, Liam is best known for their work as the lead singer of the glam punk cover band “My Fair Lady” and has played bass for many local bands. They hope you enjoy this wonderful imagining of a fantastic Shakespeare play!

  • MAYA RAVAL on Keys

Maya (they/them or she/her) is a Trent student in her sixth and final year of the Trent/Swansea Law & Arts Program. After spending three years in Wales getting her law degree, she is thrilled to be back home doing Shakespeare. For her role in this production of Twelfth Night, Maya is combining two things she adores: being an English major and being a pianist. She has been playing the piano since she was seven years old. Since then, she has discovered a passion for performance and composition, which came in handy for the musical elements of Twelfth Night. Maya was born and raised in Peterborough and lives with her family. When she is not in class or attending rehearsals, you can find Maya reading a book, baking, knitting, or taking her very good boy Jasper on a hike. Maya would like to shout out her classmates and members of the cast and crew for being excellent. Bravo!
